The Crow…  A Simple Mistake

A reflection of a film that could have seen much more success.

I had to see this movie as a lifelong fan of this deep and vastly underrated franchise, aside from the original 1994 film of course and here’s my opinion on it because I have this thing about films that get shredded by the critics and by the internet, sometimes those movies are not as horrible as the media portrays them to be, this film might be a guilty pleasure or the film is actually garbage. Decide for yourself, and as a writer, I have to stay open-minded to get an accurate outlook on it because these types of things can be very subjective. Now let’s move on…

Let me start with I am a huge fan of The Crow series and not just the original film back in 1994 but I have read the books as well when we still had massive books stores that sold graphic novels. Like Borders is a place where I used to frequent when I was young. The books and music were my escape from what I was going through as a teenager. Let’s begin with this. I strongly that this flick wouldn’t have been torn to shreds by the media long before it was actually released for one reason and this reason alone, and it’s simple. Though it has been 30 years since the original, a lot has changed in the world of film. Technology, story-telling, satisfying the superfans need that every fictional character now needs to have an origin story and has to be relatable which I personally find exhausting, but unlike the first film where it began with a crime scene where Eric Draven and Shelly Webster were already dead, the first 40 minutes of the film shows how the 2024 couple met, showing the highlights of their happiness and love being with each other up until the point where they had been killed by who was hunting Shelly shown in the beginning of the film. Eric was just an innocent bystander.

My opinion is that the reason this movie had received so much hate is because the writers used the main characters’ names of the original film from 1994. Eric and Shelly.  THAT’S IT! Other than that little mistake, this would have been a great chapter in The Crow Saga. The action was bloody and brutal, and to some, it may appear a bit gratuitous. The scenes where it shows his body heals after being stabbed or shot were amazing special effects. The story was not great but it was detailed and had some substance that flows that myth/conspiracy that the elite in this world that are just soul sacrificing satanists that made a deal with the devil to live forever, and we got to see something that differs from the other Crow films. The moment after Eric is killed by his assailants, it brings him to an afterlife that sees like a purgatory that resembles an abandoned train or an abandoned factory where he is guided by a man and tells him what he has to do and how the crow will guide him during his vengeance with some twists involved.

So I conclude this movie would have done so much better in the reviews if the main characters’ names were different and not Eric and Shelly. If you know anything about the books of The Crow is that there were many chapters in that book series of different individuals that were killed and came back to life to avenge what happened to them and I feel that this could have been just another chapter and not a fucking reboot. Aside from the big mistake of the characters’ names, and of course, my unpopular opinion from the critics and media “experts” on movies. I found this to be a very interesting chapter to the series. It came out to be a good but not great revenge movie that dealt with the downfall of an elite satanic cult. The city where it had been filmed was beautiful, unlike the original, where it seemed like an abandoned city dealing with the aftermath of a natural disaster. While complete opposite of the original, this was still a decent watch if you have an open mind and are not stuck in the past. So get out of your comfort zone and get off the bandwagon of hate for this film and give it an honest shot like I did.
